“I guess that leaves us with the dishes,” Ryan said, shaking his head. “Sometimes, I think she and the baby are conspiring against me.”

Alex laughed and got to his feet. “Well, you are outnumbered, my friend. You’d better get used to it,” he said, starting to collect the dirty dishes. “But I’ll take pity on you and help.”

Ryan laughed. “Amy already has me wrapped around her little finger; I don’t know what I’ll do when Chloe figures out that I’m a pushover,” he said.

“She’ll get away with everything she can,” Alex said, grinning at his friend. “I don’t know if I should envy you or feel sorry for you.”

Feeling out of place, she got to her feet and started helping clear the table, but Ryan stopped her. “Nina, you don’t need to help,” he said, taking the dirty dishes from her hands. “Don’t pay any attention to me and my complaining; I was just trying to guilt Alex into helping me. Why don’t you take your iced tea out on the porch and relax? We won’t be long.”

Alex set down the plates he’d been holding. “That’s an excellent suggestion,” he said, smiling at her. “We’re probably boring you anyway. When we’re done, we’ll come out and join you.”

“If you’re sure,” she said, slightly relieved. “I don’t mind helping.”

“We’ll be fine,” Ryan said, smiling at her. “Besides, you’re a guest, and guests don’t do the dishes. Amy would kill me if she even thought I made you help.”

Alex walked her out to the porch. “You don’t mind, do you?” he asked, pulling her into his arms. “I don’t want you to feel like we pushed you away. Ryan’s just trying to be nice.”

“I’m fine, Alex,” she said. “I’ll just sit here and enjoy the view.”

It was a beautiful summer day, but the porch was cool and shaded, cutting the worst of the heat, and Nina had just begun to feel sleepy when the screen door opened with a squeak and Amy came out, the baby on her shoulder. Sitting up a little straighter in the rocking chair, suddenly nervous and instantly awake, she watched the other woman settle in with the baby.

“Chloe and I thought we’d come out and keep you company,” Amy said, slipping the sleeping child off her shoulder into her arms. “Ryan and Alex are gossiping in the kitchen like old women, and I thought we could get to know each other better.”

Nina smiled at Amy, then looked down at the baby. “Oh, she’s so tiny,” she said. “How old is she?”

“She was born a week ago yesterday,” Amy said. “Would you like to hold her?”

“I’d love to, but I don’t have much experience,” Nina said, a sudden longing to feel the baby in her arms rising up from deep inside her. “Is she as fragile as she looks?”

Amy laughed. “Not even close,” she said, getting up and bringing the baby over. “Just support her head, and the rest will come easy.”

When Amy put Chloe in her arms,
